"The spinning of Rose & Albert's love story touches on the so many “spoken but unbelieved tales” that were kept hidden, and of the families that have suffered for generations.

Joy has the ability to put me in that page, sitting quietly in the corner watching her story unfold. I found my emotions had an amazing workout! Whether enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings and the sounds of nature; seeing young love freshly bloom; watch the seeds of doubt being scattered; feel the sad twists of fate; cry at the horrible treatment of Indigenous children and the heartbreak of families torn apart; understanding of the resentment toward privileged whites…happy to see the secrets kept in corners exposed; and acceptance that there is still so much to be learned.

I enjoyed the way it was woven into a small town setting and getting to know each of her characters really makes me want Joy & Dan to write a sequel."
